'You really need to be more open minded', Kylie told her old school friend Amy. Kylie was only 16, but sinceshe had moved to take a job in the city she had grown up a little too fast, well, that's what Amy's Mum thought anyway, she didn't approve of a 16 year old being on her own in the city, 'up to no good' was how she put it, and she was probably right. 'It's so exciting here', she continued on the phone, 'you'll have to come over for the weekend, if your Mum will let you, it's crazy, there's this bar where you can go, you're supposed to be 18 but they don't ask too many questions, there's men dating men, women dating women, women dating men, you name it, it's all happening here, the couple who live upstairs are actually transvestites. They go out dressed up as women all the time, I thought one of them was a woman at first, she, I mean he, looked really pretty, anyway, they go off dating men and everything but they're really nice people'. Amy knew full well that her Mum would never allow her to visit Kylie on her own, especially if she got a whisper of what she was really up to. Her Mum didn't even approve of her dating men yet, she'd never even been on a first date. 'I'll ask my Mum later, she's out at the moment', stammered Amy, 'but listen Kylie, you will be careful won't you, I mean, it all sounds kind of scary to me and I'd never forgive myself if something horrible happened to you'. Kylie assured her that she was fine and Amy hung up the receiver. She really didn't know what to do for the best. She had always been the sensible one in the friendship and Kylie had always been a bit wild. She was sure that Kylie's Mum didn't know the sort of company that she was mixing with already, if she told on her Kylie would be made to come back and would never forgive her, but if anything happened to her Amy would never forgive herself. She hated growing up, everything was so simple when you were little, your Mum looked after you, told you what to wear, when to go to bed, where to go, everything, it was just so much easier. She knew deep down that somebody ought to know what Kylie was getting up to, but would have to figure a way not to be the one to tell them.
